Students cannot just take any course within the Ontario Curriculum, students must follow pathways that lead to the end result of the grade 12 credits they wish to have for post secondary education. It is important for students to read through the courses offered and look at the prerequisites required.
Example:

Prerequisite Waivers

A student may have completed a similar course in another province or country, be a mature student, or have already completed a high school diploma, and may not have the required prerequisite. If a student wishes to take a course but does not directly meet the prerequisite requirements, they may seek principal approval to enter the course of choice.

Students wishing to apply to have the prerequisite waived should contact admissions and the prerequisite application should be completed prior to registering for a course. Prerequisite may be considered waived under, but not limited to, the following circumstances:

• A student from another province/country requires the prerequisites for post-secondary education and is unable to take the course(s) within his or her province/country.
• A homeschooled student wishes to earn OSSD credits.
• An individual is changing programs at a post-secondary institution and needs a certain credit.
• A graduated student is applying to university and did not take the appropriate courses in high school.
• An individual has been in the workforce for some time, plans to attend post-secondary education, and is required to complete certain courses for admission.
