The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test ( OSSLT) is a requirement that must be fulfilled under the Ontario Ministry Education through the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO). This test is administered once a year and typically students take it in their Grade 10 year of study in March and must be fulfilled by passing the test. If the student fails the test they can complete the requirement by taking the course (OLC4O). A diploma or graduation cannot be completed until the student has passed the test or the course.

If a student is entering an Ontario program after Grade 10 the student is still required to take the test at least once. If the student has failed the test they can seek the principal’s approval to take the course to complete the requirement for graduation.

More information and preparation can be found at https://edu.gov.on.ca/eng/document/brochure/osslt/#intro

• Volunteer Hours
Effective September 1, 1999, every student who begins secondary school in Ontario will be required to complete 40 hours of community involvement. Any student enrolled after grade 9 will have their hours evaluated by the principal. The Ministry of Education’s purpose of this requirement is to encourage students to develop an understanding of the various roles they can play in their community and to help them develop a greater sense of belonging within the community. When you enrol you will receive documents and forms that provide information on the community involvement for students and parents/guardians of Clyfford Academy as well as for the persons and organizations who are asked by students to sponsor a particular community involvement activity.
Students will select one or more community involvement activities in consultation with their parents/guardians. Selection of activities should take into account the age, maturity, and ability of the student, the location and environment of the proposed activity, and the need for any special training, equipment, and preparation. The safety of the student is paramount. Forms must be filled out and signed for a request and a completion of community hours.
It should be noted that students will not be paid for performing any community involvement activity. A parent is not required to sign a form or to be consulted if the student is eighteen years of age or older. In addition, students must be covered by insurance during community involvement.
